Alchimia e Memphis. I colori progettati del design

2012

In the 1970s and 1980s, the identity of …

Il Paradigma della Città Fluida

2013

In current global crisis the strong flows of financial social and relational capitals that powered urban regeneration over the last fifteen years are no longer available to be tapped in an indiscriminate manner as was the case until just a few years ago. The most dynamic cities in the future will no longer be those that are able to attract urban projects and investors driven by the real estate market or leisure-based development but the cities that have deep and different cultural resources and that are able to use them as the basis for creating new urban cultures and for generating new economic values. Revitalising waterfront is no longer easy opportunity for long-term investments or for using the financial capital gains of corporation or hedge funds but a more creative-driven port city has to provide precious opportunities for real development – not only quantitative but more and more qualitative – that is able to produce effects in both the domain of collective assets and that of private capitals.Settore ICAR/21 - Urbanistica

Purity and Dirt as Social Constructions: Environmental Health in an Urban Shantytown of Lagos

2005

The focus of this article, on everyday life management, emerges from a theoretical discussion about culturally specific attitudes to environmental health. Local perceptions of purity and dirt in an urban shantytown of Lagos, Nigeria, are examined through a case study of the Amukoko urban district. The qualitative data is from two fieldwork phases carried out in 1998 and 2001 in Lagos, consisting of eleven in-depth interviews, eight focus group discussions and participatory observations among Yoruba women and men. In different communities, perceptions of purity and dirt are not self-evident in terms of their meaning, but reflect the commonly shared values and moral codes of the community. Ou…

City as a museum of letters

2011

Abstract We can approach the knowledge of the city from multiple ways. We think that urban typography is a very attractive element to know the cities. In this article vindicates typography as an educational value, which allows also a better knowledge of the urban culture. Letters as a design constitute a decisive visual element in the urban environment. This article purposes a new look upon the city, at the same time that it opens up unusual spaces linked to the cultural arena and suitable geographies for the creation of learning spaces. The city is offered to us full of messages, patrimonial elements that can turn out to be very attractive if we observe them from new, interdisciplinary, su…

From creative city to generative governance of the cultural policy system? The case of Barcelona's candidature as UNESCO City of Literature

2017

Abstract Since the 1980s, cultural policies have been increasingly oriented to promoting cities. However, under the paradigm of the creative city, this approach had presented several dilemmas and contradictions. Since then, there have been various attempts to tackle such issues through a more systematic approach to cultural policy — what we identify as cultural governance oriented to cultural generation. Barcelona is a paradigmatic case illustrating this trend. The city's candidature as UNESCO City of Literature in 2015 reveals an attempt to combine international promotion, development of local cultural industries, citizen cultural engagement. Moreover, this project emerges as an attempt to…

FARE SPAZIO : Latina dalla fondazione alla contemporaneità

2018
